Salgueiro Samba School has just been declared winner of the 2009 Rio Carnival, breaking 16 years of struggles. The traditional Samba School from Tijuca/ Andaraí had already won the prize "Estandarte de Ouro", commissioned by the Rio de Janeiro newspaper "O GLOBO". With this official Carnival Title, Salgueiro reached the top contest for the Rio Carnival for the 9th time. ( GRES Acadêmicos do Salgueiro´s other titles were in 1960, 1963, 1965, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1975 and 1993. )
Salgueiro has one full point above all others. In total, the 2009 Rio Carnival Champion had 399.0 points, from 400 possible. A Beija Flor that won the second prized totalled 398 points while Portela, in third summed 397,9 points. Imperio Serrano Samba School was considered the weakest of all samba schools, staying at the last position and will parade next year on the "Access Group".
Salgueiro made its carnival parade in 2009 centered in a simple but powerful theme: "Drums". The red and white school had magnificent floats, luxurious costumes and a very synchronized opening section. Salgueiro Samba School won the 2009 Championship having won the maximum score in all criteria. The maximum score is 10. The vice-champion of the Carnival parade in Rio de Janeiro was Beija-Flor de Nilopolis Samba School, with very impressive carnival parade too.
Above, we see the picture taken by FERNANDO BIZERRA JR from the gigantic Opening Float. The float had more than 30 meters ( 100 feet ) and was composed of 14 swirling drums, that had a different motives in each side of its skins. The carnival theme the last time Salguero was Carnival Champion in Rio was "Peguei um Ita no Norte", in 1993.
Famous personality that paraded for the 2009 Rio Carnival Champion Salgeuiro werethe drummer and singer from Bahia, Carlinhos Brown, actors Eri Johnson, Paulinho Vilhena, and soccer players Edmundo and Ronaldinho Gaúcho.
Below, a beautiful picture of Drum Queen, Viviane Araujo parading with majesty:
The legendary samba school Salgueiro, was the only one greeted by the enthusiastic audience with cries of "champion, which in a certain way, anticipated the Carnival title.
A third indication Salgueiro would be champion of the Carnival Parade in Rio de Janeiro 2009 came from the streets: In two public polls, Salgueiro was also the "2009 Champion". One of the polls was promoted by EXTRA ONLINE, se results: Salgueiro - 23.74%, Beija-Flor - 18.23% , Portela - 15.83%
The other poll was promoted by JB Online, and apointed Salgeiro as probable winner.
For those who don´t know the history of the the samba school, follows a micro summary: Salgueiro was established in March 5, 1953 from the merger of Morro do Salgueiro's two samba schools called Azul e Branco do Salgueiro (Salgueiro's Blue and White) and Depois Eu Digo (I'll Say it Later), which then merged again with Unidos do Salgueiro. It first paraded in 1954 with the Romaria à Bahia samba. Some of the most legendary carnival sambas produced by Salgueiro were "Festa Para Um Rei Negro" (Pega No Ganzê), "Bahia de Todos os Deuses", "Peguei Um Ita no Norte" (Explode Coração), "Chica da Silva" and "Skindô! Skindô!".

CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE 2009 TITLE !
2009 Carnival in Rio is in full fever. Many tourists from all over the world on board, street parties with lots of fun and an excellent parade made by the "Access Group" Samba Schools in the Sambadrome. Even though I am on vacations, I dedided to write a small post about carnival artists to watch for the Rio 2009 carnival. One of them, I think will be Dani Sperle....
Above, picture of Dani Sperle in the 2008 Carnival Parade
Dani Sperle is a Brazilian 30 years old actress, recently invited to work for the TV show "Calderão do Huck", featured at Globo Network TV. Danielle Sperle will parade in the traditional Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel Samba School from Rio de Janeiro. Dani Sperle will be seen in the third sector of Mocidade´s parade, as a high-light, a distinguished post in a Samba School. ( Mocidade Independente´s Carnival Theme for 2009 will be a tribute to famous Brazilian authors: Machado de Assis a Guimarães Rosa, and will parade on Sunday, February 22nd, 2009. )
Carnival artistand producer Kiko Alves, known world-wide for discovering several artisits designed her luxurious carnival costume for the Mocidade parade. He told us: "Dani´s costume was the most difficult one I ever made in my life. It costed about US$ 50.000,00." Tough job indeed, but well deserved.
Danielle Sperle will have an extra energy two samba dance in two other parades. The artist will parade Saturday, for the Paraíso do Tuiuti Samba School, from the "Access Group" in Rio, and also for the smaller Arrastão de Cascadura samba school, as a formal Drum Queen.
Good luck Dani in your 2009 Carnival! We wish all the best, and shows us your best samba! After carnival is over, lets see if I was right in my bet. The Brazilian press and media will surely announce the new carnival muses!
, the 24 year old model and beauty muse from Acadêmicos de Tatuapé Samba School is extra-ready for the Carnival marathon in São Paulo. The muse is recovering from the fevers and body pains she had last week, February 7th and 8th. Jaque Khury will parade for the first time in her life as a Drum Queen for the Academicos do Tatuapé, samba school established on neighborhood she was born.
The Samba School Academicos do Tatuapé is part of the Access Group in São Paulo, and will parade in the Anhembi Sambadrome Sunday, February 22nd.
Below, Drum Queen Khury, Jaque in special photo shot with a luxury carnival costume:
Jaque Khury stated she had to pause a little bit with the samba rehearsals and work out, due to excessive work: “I was working out with too much weight on, and had several activities on that day. I was pumping iron and then practicing the samba dance routines too much. I was feeling bad”, she said during an interview. Model Jaque Khury states now is fully recovered and realized the incident was indeed a consequence of her loaded schedule.
Below, a photo of Jacqueline Khury at Samba Rehearsal at Gavioes da Fiel in São Paulo:
This year has been a super year for Jaque Khury She has been participating in several TV shows, interviews, and requested for several photo shoots, including Paparazzo, Ego, and VIP. Jaqque was also recently cover-girl for the prestigious Tattoo Brazil Magazine. Model Jaque Khury had a full 7 page article coverage about her tattoo history. The result was also a beautiful photo shoot of her tattoos, including her flying dragon on her back. See photo below of Jaqueline´s Tattoo:
Jaqueline was will also parade for the traditional Gavioes da Fiel Samba School in São Paulo. At Gavioes though, Jaque will parade as a high-light, which is a prestigious post too and involves accountability.
The Brazilian model was seen in several samba technical rehearsals, including one with Sabrina Sato, another muse from Gavioes da Fiel, which proves her commitment with the samba schools she represent. The former Big Brother Brazil contestant also said she was very anxious with her new post as Drum Queen for Acadêmicos do Tatuapé Samba School. Jaque Khury tells in an interview the post is a great honor, but it brings much responsibility. She concludes by saying she knows her carnival costume will have several Swarovski crystals and will be very chic. “ I wanted a costume that was not heavy nor too big, and resembled a bikini.”
Profile of Jaque Khury:
Good luck Jaque Khury once again I your two carnival parades!
Sabrina Sato Carnival Biography:> Who said Sabrinas can´t dance? TV show host, comedian and artist Sabrina Sato is another marvelous beauty present in the Brazilian Carnival. Since she was a kid, Sabrina loved to watch carnival samba parades and would join carnival balls for kids. Later, Sabrina became a professional dancer so her transition for Samba dancing was a natural move. Sabrina Sato Brazilian modeL was always attached to Gavioes da Fiel Samba School in São Paulo, where she paraded as Carnival Muse in 2008. During that parade, she showed why she was a multi-talented artist: as she was parading, the top portion of her golden costume ripped off, and she had to dance all the way holding her braw or they would fall. Many would imagine she would lose her grace or majesty right there…By the contrary, she gained fame for being able to shine, smile and dance .
Sabrina Sato gained the confidence and trust of >Gavioes da Fiel Samba School since she would always attend the samba rehearsals. The sensual Brazilian participated in innumerous rehearsals and samba school activities to help promote Gavioes da Fiel Samba School. Sabrina parades for Gavioes da Fiel since 2005 and for the 2009 carnival parade in São Paulo, Sabrina Sato will show up as one of the samba-school´s highlights, definitely a great honor.
Below, picture of Sabrina Sato at the 2008 Carnival in Sao Paulo:
Sabrina Sato also has a special passion for Rio de Janeiro´s carnival too. The beauty always says she loves the wonder city, its beaches and has paraded in 2008 and 2009 as a muse for the Salgueiro Samba-School. This is indeed a great distinction for the dancer and artist since the traditional Salgueiro Samba School is known for its high-flying muses like Viviane Araujo.
Below, models Viviane Araujo and Sabrina:
Sabrina Sato Biography: Sabrina as born February 4, 1981,in Penápolis, São Paulo and is a Brazilian celebrity. She is one of the most beautiful Brazilian actress and really represents the Brazilian beauty. She is half Japanese, maternal side, 1/4 Swiss and 1/4 Lebanese (paternal side). She was a cast member of the third season of the reality television program "Big Brother Brasil", ranking in 6th place. During the show, she had a relationship with Domini, the winner of the edition. Their relationship was covered by the media for a while after the show ended, but interest soon faded.
Above, a wonder shot of Sabrina in Luxury Carnival Costume.
Sabrina Sato reclaimed celebrity by joining Pânico, a comedy troupe that hosts a homonyms radio show on the popular, youth-focusing radio station Jovem Pan. In the show, Sabrina made fun of her own intellectual limitations and her small-town roots. In September 2003, Panico's own television show, named Pânico na TV, premiered on Rede TV. Sabrina became the show's reporter normally pulling risky or unusual tricks such as having her body covered with bees, being buried alive, eating bugs, and even been by scorpion, watched in YouTube by more than 4,5 million people!
Sabrina Satto in a samba rehearsal: passion for Samba and dance:
In 2006, she made headlines by announcing that she would leave Pânico. Soon after she released her first single, “É Verdade” (From Brazilian Portuguese to It's True; to which is also her catchphrase), talking about her departure. She came back to the show later on and it was revealed that everything was just a publicity stunt.
Along with Grazielli Massafera Sabrina Sato is Big Brother Brasil's most successful contestant ever, inasmuch as she and Massafera are the only female participants from the reality show that were able to build a career following their departure from the show.
Today she has her own website and is developing a design jeans brand. Sabrina is also known for several charity campaigns she promotes in favor of cancer patients. She has volunteered also for LBV institution in Brazil.

Below, we reproduced a small summary of the Brazilian_ Carnaval:
The Brazilian_Carnaval is an annual celebration in Brazil held 40 days before Easter and marking the start of Lent. During Lent, Roman Catholics, which constitute the majority in Brazil, are to abstain from bodily pleasures.
Brazilian_Carnaval as a whole exhibits some differences with its counterparts in Europe and other parts of the world, and within Brazil it has distinct regional manifestations.
The Brazilian citizens used to riot the Carnaval until it was accepted by the government as an expression of culture. The modern Brazilian Carnaval finds its roots in Rio-de-Janeiro in the 1830s, when the city’s bourgeoisie imported the practice of holding balls and masquerade parties from Paris. It originally mimicked the European form of the festival, over time acquiring elements derived from African and Amerindian cultures.
In the late 19th century, the cordões (literally laces in Portuguese) were introduced in Rio-de-Janeiro. These were groups of people who would parade through the streets playing music and dancing. Today they are known as blocos (blocks), consisting of a group of people who dress in costumes according to certain themes or to celebrate the Carnaval in specific ways. Blocos are generally associated with particular neighbourhoods or suburbs and include both a percussion or music group and an entourage of revellers.
Carnaval in Rio-de-Janeiro is known worldwide for the elaborate parades staged by the city’s major samba schools in the Sambadrome and is one of the world’s major tourist attractions.

Samba-schools are very large, well-financed organizations that labor year round in preparation for the great festivity. Parading in the Sambadrome runs over four entire nights and is part of an official competition, divided into seven divisions, in which a single samba school will be declared that year’s winner. Blocos deriving from the samba schools also hold street parties in their respective suburbs, through which they parade along with their followers.
Belavista Carnival Brazil will once again help foreign readers to get acquainted with the 2009 Carnival of Brazil. Belavista Blog will post the Rio 2009 “enredos” for the major samba schools part of the “Special Group”. “Enredos”, which could be freely translated into “parade themes or plot”, are in essence the theme of a Brazilian carnival parade. These are usually lofty, poetic descriptions of a subject that interest Brazilian such a politics, the environment, a famous person, etc. For every year, every samba school chooses a theme on which its parades are based upon. It could be an important event, a famous person, a significant era in history, critics to the society and so forth.
The carnival parade themes for Rio´s Carnival seen below were outlined by the order in which they will parade on Rio´s 2009 Sambadrome. We also included the Samba School´s Carnavalesco, who are the artistic director / designer which signs the carnival parade. (This person usually designs the concept of the costumes, floats, and sequence of groups in the carnival parade.) Finally we included the logo / image of the Carnival parade themes. Now a days, most of the samba schools also design themes logo into their sites that visually summarizes the concept of the parade. Good research and have fun!

Below, we reproduced a small summary of the Brazilian Carnival:
The Brazilian Carnival (Portuguese: Carnaval) is an annual celebration in Brazil held 40 days before Easter and marking the start of Lent. During Lent, Roman Catholics, which constitute the majority in Brazil, are to abstain from bodily pleasures.
Brazilian Carnival as a whole exhibits some differences with its counterparts in Europe and other parts of the world, and within Brazil it has distinct regional manifestations.
Rio de Janeiro Carnival:
The Brazilian citizens used to riot the Carnival until it was accepted by the government as an expression of culture. The modern Brazilian Carnival finds its roots in Rio de Janeiro in the 1830s, when the city’s bourgeoisie imported the practice of holding balls and masquerade parties from Paris. It originally mimicked the European form of the festival, over time acquiring elements derived from African and Amerindian cultures.
In the late 19th century, the cordões (literally laces in Portuguese) were introduced in Rio de Janeiro. These were groups of people who would parade through the streets playing music and dancing. Today they are known as blocos (blocks), consisting of a group of people who dress in costumes according to certain themes or to celebrate the Carnival in specific ways. Blocos are generally associated with particular neighbourhoods or suburbs and include both a percussion or music group and an entourage of revellers.
During the Carnival, a fat man is elected to represent the role of Rei Momo, the "king" of Carnival.
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is known worldwide for the elaborate parades staged by the city’s major samba schools in the Sambadrome and is one of the world’s major tourist attractions.
Samba schools are very large, well-financed organizations that labor year round in preparation for Carnival. Parading in the Sambadrome runs over four entire nights and is part of an official competition, divided into seven divisions, in which a single samba school will be declared that year’s winner. Blocos deriving from the samba schools also hold street parties in their respective suburbs, through which they parade along with their followers.
Goddess of Carnival Fabia Borges relationship with Brazil´s Carnival is probably one of the oldest, amongst Carnival Muses since her mother Juju Maravilha, was a respected samba school Flag Bearer (“porta-bandeira” ) for Unidos da Tijuca Samba School. Fábia started to parade when she was 5 years old, dancing samba in the kids section of the Nilópolis based ambsa school Beija-Flor, her mother’s first Samba School. Then, Juju Maravilha was invited to Parade as Flag-Bearer for Unidos da Tijuca Samba School, and the Carnival Muse joined the traditional school from Tijuca as well.
Below, a close up of Fabia Borges:
Fábia debuted as an adult on the Sambadrome in 1996, with a carnival design costume. Once she said during that parade, she had to change herself in front of everyone, since she arrived late at the concentração – meeting point. She was positively surprised since no one was shocked, or overlooked, since everybody already respected her as a carnival professional. Fábia Borges was later invited to the Carnival Drums Queen post for the Acadêmicos da Rocinha, where she parades since 2006.
A magnificent picture of Fabia Borges by the professional photographer Alexandre Vidal below
According to the Brazilian press, the Goddess of Carnival and Drum Queen Fabia Borges has been invited to pose for a mens magazine, but didn’t accept since her former husband was always very jealous. She has her divorce in 2007. Apart from her carnival profession, Fabia Borges used to be a sales manager for a company in Spain, where she lived for many years. The Carnival beauty Fabia Borges goes to the beach whenever she can and works out several hours per week to maintain her physical attributes.

Fábia once created an instant havoc within carnaval muses, when she stated "All Drums Queens hated each other.” We can surely imagine… The Brazilian model is now 28 years old, but looks far less. She has proportionate 1,68 cm, 92 cm hips, and 50 kg body and soul of pure delight! In my personal opinion Fabia is one of the most marvelous and graceful Carnival muses in Brazil! Way to go Fábia!
Another great photo of Brazil Fabia Borges, by Alexandre Vidal.
Goddess of Carnival Viviane Araujo´s name was linked to the Brazilian Carnival s soon as she reached Brazil ´s media lime lights. Viviane always loved Samba and started parading when she was very young in Rio´s Sambadrome, at the age of 18. As a true samba dancer Viviane, Araujo had her first chance as a true Drum Queen at Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel Samba School in 2005, where she paraded for several years.
In 2008, Araujo, Viviane paraded as Drum Queen for two Samba Schools: Salgueiro Samba School in Rio and Mancha Verde in São Paulo. Viviane Araujo 2010 will repeat this success recipe in these disputed samba parade posts. Viviane Araújo is considered one of the best samba dancers amongst all Drum Queens.
If you have a chance to go to the Salgueiro Samba Rehearsal, you will be able to testify what I say… Good luck Viviane in your two parades in 2009 Brazil Carnival.
Below, the beautiful Muse in her Salgueiro parade in 2008:
Goddess of Carnival Viviane Araujo 2010 Bio: Viviane Araujo is a Brazilian artist and actress. Muse of Carnival Viviane started her career when she was 16 years old, and was elected “ Carnival Panther” in 1996, Rio de Janeiro.
She was then cover girl for several other magazines. Viviane Araujo was also elected Queen of the Brazilian version of the Gay Parade, in São Paulo, being kind of a godmother for Gay community. Today, Viviane Araujo is engaged to a Brazilian soccer player called Radamés. Viviane was born March 25, 1975 in Rio de Janeiro.
Prepare your hearts for the 2009 Carnival! Get yourself to Brazil! 68 days to Rio Carnival and many samba rehearsals too!
Yes, yes! Carnival in Rio is arriving in full power mode. More than ever, Brazil´s street parties were revitalized and today most of the young, beautiful and tanned remain at the wonder city to take part in some of the 300 " Blocos de Rua", translated freely as Rio Street Groups or Rio Street Bands. Just like last year, Belavista-Rio Carnival Brazil prepared a full list of the Top Street Bands/Blocos de Rua for the 2009 Rio Carnival. The Street Groups/Blocos de Rua presented in this list were separated by days, so you can pick in an easier manner, your free carnival street partying.
In this year list, we will add a special mark to high-light the best "Blocos de Rua"/ Street Bands in Rio for each given carnival day. Next to the name of the Street Band we consider unbeatable for that day, we emphasized the list with the phrase: “Top Street Band ”.
If you are not really familiar with the definition of this Brazil Carnival popular expression of street parties, please read at the end of the post a more formal explication of the Rio Street Bands. As a more simple definition, we could say the Street Bands – Blocos de Rua are purposely less organized, structured and have a different objective than traditional samba schools´ parades.
Rio StreetBands ( Blocos de Rua ) include brass instruments in their orchestra and invite everyone that shows up to joins in. Rio´s street bands also have a pre-determined marching route, where the orchestra is followed by the energetic samba dancers. Partiers may come dressed in costumes, bathing suits, plain clothes, special T-shirts, or even in drag. This is the best thing of the Street-Bands, everyone is free to its own style and will. This is by far, Rio´s most popular, democratic and vibrant carnival expression in the wonder city, according to Belavista´s Editor!
In this complete guide of the 2009 Rio Street Bands, you will be able to identify the Blocos/ Bands by neighborhood too. There is partying much all over town: Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, Flamengo, Vila Isabel, Leblon , Santa Teresa...There is even a street band at the Paquetá Island!
Pick your favorite >Rio Street Group< and join in!
There are 109 blocos in Rio to chose from in this list!!

Definitions for Rio Street-Groups, Blocos:
Rio Streetbands, in Portuguese “Blocos de Rua”, after slowly growing for many years, have emerged as both a great spectator attraction and opportunity to become part of the Carnival on the streets of Rio de Janeiro.
The legendary Bloco Bola Preta now draws a street crowd of 200,000! Simpatia e Quase Amor from Ipanema is now drawing 100,000. Monobloco's parade closing out the Carnaval season the Sunday after Shrove Tuesday at noon in front of Leblon beach may set record crowds in 2008
Since 2004, the streetbands have exploded with well over 300 blocos. The boom in blocos began with the growth in the internet as we closed out the last millennium and is part of Rio de Janeiro's determination to be a leading capital of global culture as we move forward into the new age.
Avenida Rio Branco, in the center of downtown Rio, exclusively for the parades of big organized Blocos. These are street carnival groups, celebrating carnival in a much more informal way than the big samba schools. You can participate along with everyone else, instead of sitting on concrete stands watching an organized parade.
This is the heart of the "Rio´s Street Carnival” which includes the greater likelihood of Locations playing percussion instruments with their friends at their favorite hangout as well as the Bandstands and the many Parades of downtown's Rio Branco Avenue. These events are inclusive and practice for the musicians begins months before the Carnaval and the parades do not end until Sunday of the following weekend.
The Rio de Janeiro free street carnival begins in November. The street carnival is structured in groups named: bloco, cordon, band or rancho but they are really about simple fun with others. If you wander in the zona sul districts of Gávea, Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana and Botafogo during the Carnaval you will often find them hanging out prior to parading. This is known as the period of Concentration. Most bands also have official T-shirts for sale on the spot for about US$10, to help with the costs.
Following the example of many Brazilian celebrities, Ellen Cardoso a.k.a. Mulher Moranguinho, became too a Carnival Drum Queen for a Samba School in Rio. The 31 years old Rio “Carioca” Funk genre musical dancer decided to parade in Rio de Janeiro´s Carnival late 2008, after much speculation over which samba school she would represent. Moranguinho stated in several interviews that to participate in a Rio Samba School was one of her dreams, and it would be a “great honor to take part in that opportunity”. The carnival gossip almost announced Moranguinho as the Drum Queen for Porto da Pedra Samba School in October, but was not confirmed. Finally in November, Ellen Cardoso was officially presented as the Drum Queen for Paraiso do Tuiuti, by the samba school board. The professional dancer took profit of many samba rehearsals and carnival promotional events in November and December to practice her samba dance routines.
See below the Brazilian beauty Moranguinho dancing Samba:
Ellen Cardoso, aka Mulher Moranguinho also stated in another interview she was totally impressed with the size of Rio ´s Carnival structure, which she labeled as “pharaohnic”, much different from Salvador´s carnival. Moranguinho was born in São Paulo and was discovered two years ago by a local Carioca funk MC, called MC Créu and gained instant fame after many dancing performances. The Brazilian brunette, who will get married this year with a businessman from São Paulo, was formally crowned Drum Queen for Paraíso do Tuiuti samba school January 16th, with great media frenzy. Paraíso do Tuiuti is Samba-School from the Access Group in Rio de Janeiro, and it´s rehearsals are located at its headquarters at Sao Cristovão. The colors of Paraiso do Tuiuti are blue and gold and 2009 Samba theme will be devoted to the Urca Cassino in Rio.
